Shadyside name comes from the 19th-century Pennsylvania Railroad station, which was named for its shady lanes. The neighborhood has many boutiques, shops, restaurants, and vintage stores. It is also known for its night life because of the many bars and clubs. Shadyside also includes UPMC, churches, Mellon Spray Park, and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. It is home to a mix of families, young professionals, artists, musicians, students, and apartment dwellers. There are three main business districts: Walnut Street, Ellsworth Avenue, and S. Highland Avenue. Overall, the neighborhood has an urban feel to it, and it is a walkable neighborhood. Nne of the biggest attractions is Jam on Walnut, which is a summer concert series/block party that draws thousands of people to the neighborhood. Many years ago it was once home to an iron furnace and an oil refinery.
